Learning Experiences

Flex classes at the high schools are designed to give students greater ownership of their learning through a personalized, self-paced approach. In these classrooms, students progress through course content at a pace that fits their individual needs and provides flexible spaces for learning with support from teachers for intervention and enrichment. This structure allows students to set goals, reflect on their progress, and demonstrate mastery through regular checkpoints. Flex classes open the door for students to take more courses over time, accelerate their learning, and explore areas of personal interest aligned to the district’s Portrait of a Graduate competencies. By blending academic rigor with student agency, the flex model supports deeper learning and meaningful engagement tailored to each learner’s path.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way students learn, think, and prepare for the future. We are committed to responsibly integrating AI into our classrooms to enhance personalized learning, support rigorous core instruction, and expand career-connected opportunities. By leveraging AI tools, students gain valuable experience with emerging technologies while developing durable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration. Our goal is to ensure every student is future-ready, equipped not only with academic knowledge, but also with the confidence and competencies needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

AI's Impact on Education

In grades 9 and 10, Willoughby-Eastlake students have the opportunity to participate in a student-driven Career Capstone course designed to help them explore career interests, build essential skills, and apply their learning through personalized projects. The experience culminates in a Capstone Showcase, where students present their work to peers, families, and community members. As the culmination of their grades 7–10 exploratory journey, this course empowers students to reflect on their interests and strengths and make informed decisions about their next steps in high school and after graduation.

Our CTE programs offer students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to build skills in a number of different career pathways and fields. These programs are designed to equip students with practical skills, college credit and industry certifications, enhancing their readiness for post-secondary education or immediate entry into the workforce. Our goal is to ensure every program offers multiple pathways, including direct entry into the workforce, two-year degree opportunities, and four-year college options.
